Neurodivergence

As and AuDHD (ADHD and Autistic) therapist I am not only deeply interested in working with other neurodivergent people but I find that it also deeply increases my ability to connect with these clients. This is a phenomenon called “double empathy” and it’s an empirical proven concept that neurodivergent people communicate just fine (contrary to popular opinion) and that neurotypical people also communicate well among eachotehr. The problem is in cross neurotype communication and because ND people are the minority we have often been labeled as having communication issues, when in fact this is not true. Having a therapist who naturally speaks your neurotype in and of itself can be hugely therapeutic and deeply aid in the unmasking and finding an authentic expression of self. And, as my homepage states, therapeutic rapport is the most important factor in successful therapeutic outcomes. My experience personally and professionally has taught me that neurodivergence is not a “problem” in and of itself. It cannot be “fixed”, it is an in-born way that the brain and nervous system views and experiences the world and processes input that is functioning with as high as 20 times more synaptic connections. The beuty and the pain of this is exactly what we will dive into as well as making you at home in your own mind and body just as it already is. The work in therapy when dealing with Neurodivergence is learning to be yourself, to find yourself , trust yourself and unmask. There are often many layers of shame associated with years of trying to shove a beautiful multifaceted ND brain into a neurotypical culture. The fact is that the understanding ADHD, autism and giftedness and especially the intersectionality of these qualities is in the dark ages, even the best intended doctors and therapists regularly pathologize and attempt to “correct” what is healthy and normal for that mind. Very much like conversion therapy of the 50s through 90s that tried to make gay people straight. Unmasking and finding a neuroaffirming therapist can be painful, liberating and empowering all at the same time. Sometimes it can sound like the freedom of “Im not broken” for the first time and the pain of “I’ve felt so broken” my whole life at the same time. Id love to explore all the unique facets of your unique neurotype together!
